University of Idaho Extension calls carpenter ants serious building pests in northern Idaho, where moisture is plentiful. The National Pesticide Information Center says they prefer damp wood and that finding the nest is the key to control. Snow stacked against a foundation can keep wood wet into spring, so we check sills, crawl space framing, and decks first.
Idaho Fish and Game lists the bushy tailed woodrat, or packrat, as present and native in Idaho, and woodrats may move into the attics and walls of houses near their habitat and damage wiring. Idaho's Central District Health says the main hantavirus concern in Idaho is Sin Nombre virus, carried by deer mice. We seal vents and gaps with heavy gauge hardware cloth, then trap.
Most are harmless. Washington State University warns that spraying alone is a short fix unless you stop spiders from getting in. We remove webs and egg sacs, seal gaps, and treat the spots they use.
Check eaves, decks, and cedar or log walls in spring for small nests, and call us for any nest near a door.
Seal gaps in fall and check for nests and droppings in spring. When you reopen, air the cabin out first, and do not sweep or vacuum droppings, as University of Arizona Extension advises. We offer comprehensive close up checks in fall and open up checks in spring.
Panhandle Health District says North Idaho has several tick types that can spread disease, and ticks live in tall grass, brush, and wooded areas. Keep grass short near the house and check pets and kids after time outdoors.
